Having been pushed back for a couple of months, the 93rd Academy Awards finally happened – and in short, it didn’t disappoint. Although the awards season of 2021 was a socially-distanced affair with split and virtual locations, this year’s Oscars brought back the familiar glitz and glamour of award shows that we’ve come to miss and we’re swooning over the looks that stole the show! From electrifying hues that dominated the red carpet to subtle yet impactful fashion moments, here are 12 of our favourite looks that made it to our best-dressed list:
1. Amanda Seyfried in Armani Privé
The Best Supporting Actress nominee stole the spotlight in a magnificent gown which was part of Armani Privé’s Spring 2021 Couture collection, complemented by diamond jewellery from Forevermark. The floor-grazing gown in fiery red was made of plissé tulle which was ruffled to create an eye-catching effect. Talk about making a statement!
2. Angela Bassett in Alberta Ferretti
The veteran actress brought drama to the Oscars and turned heads in a custom Alberta Ferretti number and dazzling jewellery from Chopard. Her off-shoulder dress was designed with an exaggerated draped organza shoulder and train. Add a mid-thigh slit to that and you’ve got a look you can go on and on about for days!
3. Carey Mulligan in Valentino
One word to describe Carey’s look: show-stopping! The Best Actress nominee was decked in a golden Valentino Haute Couture creation which featured an elegant strapless bandeau and sleek, voluminous skirt. What made the look even more impressive? It’s entirely embroidered with iridescent sequins, which was done by hand and took 350 hours, no less!
4. Colman Domingo in Versace
The Belizian-American actor stood out from the crowd on the red carpet as he wasn’t afraid to don a bright fuchsia three-piece suit by Atelier Versace, coupled with gold accessories by David Yurman. The bold ensemble was adorned with 4,500 precious Swarovski crystals cascading down the shoulders of the jacket and took 150 hours to create!
5. Halle Berry in Dolce & Gabbana
As expected, Halle’s overall look (including her chic new bob) was nothing short of breathtaking as she grabbed attention in a lavender-hued strapless, billowy tulle dress by Dolce & Gabbana. Not to be missed: the oversized ribbon detail that added extra appeal to the look!
6. H.E.R. in Dundas
Singer-songwriter H.E.R. looked oh-so enchanting in a jewel-toned number as she bagged the award for Best Original Song, Fight For You. Dressed in a custom Dundas inspired by the legendary Prince, the monochromatic cobalt blue get-up featured a halter neck and flared leg jumpsuit that’s layered underneath a matching embellished hooded cape with lyric motif from her award-winning song. It looked even more captivating styled with her long, glamorous waves!
7. Margot Robbie in Chanel
As Chanel’s house ambassador, Margot showed up in a custom Chanel Haute Couture metallic lace dress from the Fall 2019 collection. The Australian actress looked ever so graceful in the low-back dress complemented by a Chanel clutch and Chanel Fine Jewelry. With natural-looking Chanel makeup, her hair in a low ponytail with beachy waves and new, blunt bangs, Margot’s look was equally effortless and romantic!
8. Olivia Cooke in Versace
Although Olivia had to miss the red carpet event and attended the Oscars virtually, she still made it into our best-dressed list. The English actress dazzled in an Atelier Versace creation from its SS21 Couture collection in shimmery pink. With a fringe-effect crystal embroidery, satin corset bodice and sheaths of transparency, the gown gave off a sensual vibe especially when worn with her red hair.
9. Regina King in Louis Vuitton
Regina was the epitome of ethereal beauty in a custom-made gown by Louis Vuitton. The American actress and director was seen in a figure-hugging baby blue number that was adorned with intricate silver sequins and crystal embroidery. The power shoulders were undoubtedly the point of interest of this dress, reminiscent of those butterfly wings we adore!
10. Tiara Thomas in Jovana Louis
In a sea of punchy hues, Tiara’s all-white ensemble was a breath of fresh air. The American singer-songwriter looked radiant in custom Jovana Louis which featured a plunging neckline jumpsuit and structured blazer. Decorated with whimsical white feathers, the get-up struck the perfect balance between elegance and playfulness.
11. Vanessa Kirby in Gucci
Donning a custom Gucci creation and diamond Cartier necklace, Vanessa looked absolutely stunning as she strutted down the red carpet. Designed by Alessandro Michele, the strapless silk gown screamed ‘sophisticated’ at a glance and the box pleat detail on the back, which trailed down to an elongated train, added to the dramatic effect of the look!
12. Zendaya in Valentino
The stunning Miss Z never ceases to amaze us whenever she steps onto the red carpet – including at this year’s Oscars. The actress appeared to embody a Greek goddess in a flowy, fluorescent yellow chiffon gown named ‘Force de beauté’ by Maison Valentino’s Pierpaolo Picciolo, which also happened to glow in the dark! The custom-made piece was hand-crafted in 300 hours and to complement the look were equally vibrant Jimmy Choo heels as well as extravagant Bulgari jewels worth a whopping US$6 million (about RM24.5 million)!
