I have to admit, every time the Mid-Autumn Festival comes around, I look forward to all the delicious mooncakes that I get to indulge in! The attractive packaging that they come in are simply bonuses for me. But don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of a fun and innovative gift box and I’ve loved collecting them in the past. However, most of them ended up being stored or thrown away as I could never find proper uses for them once I’ve emptied them out.
Now, as I’m trying to cut down on waste and being mindful of the things I purchase, I was really happy to see that Unbox by Huff + Puff has launched its newest line of mooncake gift sets, combining a local vintage aesthetic (which I love!) with purposeful creations I’d actually use around the house!
If you’re unfamiliar with the name, Unbox by Huff + Puff is fairly new to the scene, having launched a year ago with its Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake gift sets. Since then, the brand has released more vintage-styled packages for Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri which can be reused for just about anything – the same goes for the latest ‘Moonlight Series’! Read on to see why I’m absolutely in love with the line.
1. It’s reminiscent of the good ol’ days
Featuring two new concepts which are the ‘Moon Bright Bright’ set (RM168): a two-tiered rattan stand with a paper box carrier, and ‘The Moon Picker’ set (RM158): a mini rattan basket with a strap handle inspired by tea pickers, they are joined by the fan-favourite 3-tiered paper-core tiffin ‘Over The Moon’ set (RM128) and an optional personalised wooden tag. What I love about them is that each design doesn’t fall short of the local vintage charm that Unbox by Huff + Puff is known for injecting into its creations. With rattan materials, prints that reference traditional shop signages and hand-sketched drawings depicting childhood memories, the line feels like a homage to simpler days and makes the perfect Mid-Autumn Festival gift this year – even for yourself!

2. No more throwing away or hoarding empty gift boxes
Probably my favourite part about the series is that every piece can be repurposed into household objects I’d actually use! This is a major plus point for me as it solves my problem of pretty packages with nowhere to put ’em. Take the ‘Moon Bright Bright’ set, for instance. Its design lets you place fresh fruits on the rattan trays while the ‘The Moon Picker’ set would make a great planter sleeve! Besides that, the ‘Over The Moon’ tiffin set can be used to store keys or trinkets.
Psst… The optional personalised wooden tag can also be repurposed into a unique keychain as it comes engraved with your chosen name or message on it and fastened with a lucky knot!
3. Halal mooncakes for all
I love that the brand decided to feature halal mooncakes this year by popular demand as it allows my Muslim friends and family to join in on the fun of Unbox-ing these charming gifts! Partnering up with Fai Fong Bakery, a halal-certified establishment that’s been around since 1948, the ‘Moonlight Series’ includes iconic mooncake flavours like red bean, pandan lotus and white lotus paste along with single yolk variations too.
