If you read my previous story on Diptyque, you’d know that I’m an avid collector of the Parisian brand’s candles, and I’m thrilled to get the chance to expand my collection as the limited-edition City Candles have landed in one spot!
Usually sold in the respective cities, the full range is now available at the Diptyque Pavilion KL boutique until 25th April 2021. For someone who was used to travelling once every few weeks, the Covid-19 pandemic has really changed my lifestyle as I’ve not been out of Malaysia for over a year now – not that I’m complaining, because thanks to the nine candles in the City Candles collection, I can imagine that I’m in a different city anytime – no map, passport or quarantine required!
In a nutshell, the candles are named after the cities of Berlin, Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, Londres (London), Miami, New York, Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo – each of them picked for its distinct charm. While I’ve yet to visit Berlin and Miami from the list of cities mentioned, taking a whiff of the other candles takes me back to the time I spent in each locale – whether it’s having a hearty breakfast at The Beverly Hills Hotel, taking a stroll in a flower market in London, enjoying a night out at an underground speakeasy in New York or soaking in the contrasting sights of Tokyo during the day and night. Ahhh… memories!
In terms of the look and feel of each City Candle, think unique landscapes and designs that celebrate the cities and their unforgettable ambiance. Continuing the tradition set forth by its founders, Diptyque has scoured the globe in search of olfactory treasures and experiences which were eventually summed up as a scented candle inspired by each city, while the design highlights a notable decorative architecture. For instance, the design of ‘Beverly Hills’ is a nod to the emblematic wallpaper of The Beverly Hills Hotel, where the colours bring to mind a touch of psychedelia that echoes the lifestyle of the fancy neighbourhood it's in. As for its scent, think palm trees in a lush garden and a bouquet of white flowers combined with lemon and mint – perfect for when I want to create that holiday vibe at home!
On the other hand, the design of ‘Londres’ (London) reflects the colourful yet refined Columbia Road flower market while the scent takes me on a stroll through the renowned spot, with fragrant plants and flowers warmed by a spicy touch. As for ‘New York’s design, it was inspired by the fascinating atmosphere of the city at night. And the scent? It’s an elegant composition of the woods like cedar, patchouli and vetiver enhanced with a mysterious hint of tobacco – a distinct scent I’d definitely find lingering in an underground bar. Now, which of these candles strikes your fancy?
Diptyque’s City Candles Collection retails for RM375 each and is available at the brand’s Pavilion KL boutique from 15th to 25th April 2021.
