As physical runway shows returned in full swing at New York Fashion Week, we’re so happy that we got to see all the latest designer looks in action including Coach’s Spring 2022 Collection – virtually, of course, as the borders are still closed here in Malaysia!

Held at Hudson River Park’s Pier 76 in Manhattan, the American fashion house kicked off the show with a special episode of ‘Coach TV: Public Access’ directed by Ty Evans and Danielle Aphrodite Nemet, staying true to its approach of a hybrid performance that blended digital and physical formats. Featuring appearances by the legendary Chaka Khan, Instagram star Rickey Thompson, model Stella Maxwell, RuPaul’s Drag Race’s alumni Utica, and even Malaysian celebrities, Fazura and Joe Flizzow, the nostalgic TV montage took on a different route this time with inspiration drawn from the communal and inclusive television programming from the ’90s.

Just like Coach’s previous shows, what followed next was the collection itself with models emerging straight from the subway station to the pier with skateboarders riding alongside them. Clad in a mix of bright prints from exaggerated, head-to-toe houndstooth to plaid and more, what stole the show for us was the nod to the ’90s with grunge-inspired layering, oversized logo tees and baggy denim bottoms.

But these weren’t your average retro looks; in fact, the collection had a strong Gen-Z feel to it – from the styling of the ready-to-wear pieces right down to the energy that the show exuded. Truth be told, it was actually refreshing to watch as Creative Director, Stuart Vevers brought back the nostalgia with a twist – something that embodies many of the young fashion-forward individuals today!

Spring presents my vision of a new vocabulary of American fashion inspired by our 80-year heritage through the lens of the next generation. – Stuart Vevers, Creative Director of Coach

Another thing we loved about this collection is that florals were nowhere in sight – no hate for florals for spring, though! Instead, Stuart gave it life by incorporating bright colours – from vibrant red and yellow to pastel green, purple and even teal.

Taking it a step further, the collection also explored archival bags designed by Coach’s first designer, Bonnie Cashin (who also introduced the iconic turn-lock closure on Coach bags!) while giving them a sustainable update in upcycled leather from baseball gloves and environmentally-responsible leather. Not only that, the line also features upcycled denim pieces plus vintage Bonnie Cashin-inspired outerwear as part of the brand’s steady commitment to sustainability.
