As someone who gets excited over sustainable and environmentally-friendly products, I’m always happy to see big-name brands making eco-conscious changes or being active in their commitment to protecting the environment. As we all know by now, large companies need to lead the way for all of us to achieve a sustainable future together.

One company I’m most thrilled about is Longchamp with its new ‘Le Pliage®’ Green line! Now created as a sustainable version of the iconic and beloved ‘Le Pliage®’ bag, the new collection which launches today uses recycled materials, more specifically nylon, in its construction and is the result of the French luxury brand’s impressive efforts in sustainability. Apart from being just as durable, washable, mendable and foldable as the original, here are some of the reasons why I’m head-over-heels for this collection:

Recycled fibres, but good as new

Just about everything about the bag (aside from the Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified leather parts) is made of recycled materials. For instance, its body uses recycled polyamide canvas, also known as nylon, and is sourced from carpets, fishing nets, pre-consumer waste nylon clothing and fabric offcuts from garment production. The canvas contains about 70–100% recycled fibres and has received the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification. However, to maintain its durability, a phthalate-free PVC coating needs to be used, but rest assured, the brand is researching more sustainable options.

Aside from that, the line’s backpacks and travel bags use GRS-certified recycled polyester with 100% recycled fibres on their shoulder straps. The zip tapes and embroidery thread that make out the brand’s signature racehorse logo also use a similar recycled polyester that contain about 90% recycled fibres. Even the hardware on them contains recycled metals with 30% of it on the signature brass press-studs. Swipe through the gallery to check out the range:

Eco-conscious packaging

It wouldn’t be the real deal without using sustainable packaging for the ‘Le Pliage®’ Green collection and Longchamp has taken specific measures to make sure it arrives safely and sustainably! Transported via recycled polyethylene and recycled paper labels, the bags are sold in stores with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified recyclable paper bags that are sourced from sustainably-managed forests.

Ongoing sustainable initiatives

One of the winning factors for me about Longchamp and its new ‘Le Pliage®’ Green range is the continuous effort that the brand is making on addressing its impact on the environment. From eliminating plastic-coated paper packaging to opting for slower and more sustainable transport while minimising the use of air, Longchamp is actively working on ways to protect the environment and even commits to using only recycled canvas by 2023 – wouldn’t that be amazing?
