I believe in love at first sight... when it comes to statement bags. The more whimsical, oddly-shaped and eye-catching they are, the better. And such is the case with one of Kate Spade’s latest releases from its Holiday 2020 Collection, the ‘Yours Truly 3D Mailbox Bag’.
As a fan of the brand’s novelty bags, I’ve been closely following the new drops season after season for many years, and some of the standout designs that I can remember off the top of my head are the ‘Admit One Theatre Ticket Clutch’, the ‘Chocolate Heart Bag’, the ‘Champagne Bucket Bag’, the ‘Typewriter Bag’ and the ‘Chocolate Box Clutch’, all of which make great arm candies for Valentine’s Day – and every other special day of the year!
However, when Nicola Glass took over as the Creative Director of Kate Spade over three years ago, she was set on refining the house’s existing codes of playful femininity and novelty factor. This meant that I started seeing less of those cutesy, wacky designs that I’ve long been a huge fan of, and more of the practical, suitable-for-daily-wear kind of bags instead.

So imagine my excitement when I spotted this particular design on Kate Spade’s seasonal catalogue recently. Although it isn’t entirely new, this reinterpretation of the ‘Yours Truly Mailbox Bag’ from three years ago is just my cup of tea – less subtle and old-school, and more fun and up-to-date!
The new ‘Yours Truly 3D Mailbox Bag’ takes the shape of a typical American mailbox with a two-way zip-around closure and comes in a smooth red currant Italian leather with a champagne faille lining and a snap-tab slip pocket inside. The Kate Spade New York foil-embossed logo sits on top of a 3D heart and ‘Letters’ pocket that cleverly holds a vintage-inspired envelope. Besides taking me back to my younger days when I used to send letters to my pen-pals in similar sleeves, this one spells out ‘Wish you were here! xx’, provides room to hold some cash and cards, and is hooked to a detachable gold chain!
With its dimensions of 18.4cm (h) x 17cm (w) x 7cm (d), it’s small enough that it looks cute when carried or worn as a crossbody, yet roomy enough that it will hold a lot more than your stack of love letters. Mobile phone, wallet, car keys and house keys, mints, scrunchie, compact powder, lipstick, you name it – check, check and check!
