As an essential element in our daily lives, water and its importance often go unnoticed and even taken for granted at times. On top of that, in the world we live in today, having clean water has become more of a privilege rather than a basic human right.

Though water is abundant on earth with 71% and 97% of it found on the earth’s surface and in the oceans respectively, in many areas of the world, access to clean water is hard to come by. With the world’s population and activity increasing each year plus the ever-changing weather conditions, it’s alarming to know that more than 785 million people lack access to basic water services in 2017 alone, as reported by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Not only that, according to Global Commission on Adaptation, it’s estimated that over 50% of the world’s population will lack sufficient water by 2050.

However, we can still make changes in hopes of a better future through small acts like conserving water at home and recycling rainwater. But if you’re looking to make a difference on a slightly larger scale that’s still within your capacity, you can support initiatives and organisations that help provide access to clean water just like Shiseido Professional’s Share Water Project.

One bottle at a time

Established to share the gift of water with people around the world, the Share Water Project was launched through Shiseido Professional’s Sublimic range that strongly believes in the importance of water for beauty and well-being for everyone. Hoping to make an impact, the haircare label has released the Sublimic Wonder Shield (Limited Design by Mikitype) – a powerful serum that shields the hair from seven external stressors like UV radiation, heat and dust. Working together with Japanese creative calligrapher, Mikitype, Shiseido Professional is donating 3% of the proceeds from the limited-edition bottle to WaterAid – an international NGO that aims to solve the water crisis by providing clean water, improved sanitation and proper hygiene to the most affected communities in the world – to share the pleasures of water with those in need.

Exploring and reimagining historical calligraphy in his own unique way, Mikitype has created a stunning one-of-a-kind design for the limited-edition Sublimic Wonder Shield serum. Through the idea that letters are formed by a collection of lines and curves, the artist has disassembled and reconstructed each letter from the word “WATER” to create a new form that expresses how water meets water again by associating it with human behaviour.

In support of this initiative by Shiseido Professional, we asked three personalities: model and actress, Chandni Bainz, fitness trainer, nutrition coach and YouTuber, Joanna Soh, and co-founder of local fashion brand, Hanya, Veen Dee Tan to share with us what water means to them.
