1. Augmented Reality (AR)

The coronavirus pandemic in 2020 made many fashion and beauty retailers realise the importance of having an online presence. AR in short is a form of technology that many beauty brands have leveraged on last year to allow customers to virtually try on products before making their online purchases. While it started a few years back, this function is expected to grow bigger in 2021 as we foresee more retailers adapting to this trend and other new services as they become more digitally independent in the retail world.

2. Clean beauty

More often than not, we tend to focus on beauty products that will instantly help us solve our beauty woes rather than look at its ingredients or packaging. Clean beauty refers to products that have been wholesomely made using ingredients and materials that are safe for our bodies and the environment, and have been ethically produced too. Fun fact: products that are made from palm oil are one of the major causes of deforestation due to unethical palm oil production methods.

3. Maskne

Despite knowing that we would soon be able to get the Covid-19 vaccine, we’re pretty sure that the face mask trend will be around longer than we expected it to. In a nutshell, maskne refers to any form of acne that appears on the nose, cheeks and chin as a result of wearing face masks for an extended period of time. As facial plastic surgeon, Jacob D. Steiger M.D. explains to The Washington Post, “Our masks trap moisture, sweat, oil and the dirt on our skin. This causes blemishes including acne, small bumps, inflamed hair follicles, irritation, contact dermatitis and rosacea to develop.”

What to try to ease maskne on your skin:

Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions All-Over Clearing Treatment, RM116
Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, RM95
Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Acne Clear Foam, RM39.90

4. Multimasking

Can’t bring yourself to decide on which mask to reach out for as you have a combination of different skin problems? Why not try a few in one shot? Multimasking refers to the use of different types of masks on your face simultaneously. For instance, if you have an oily nose, terrible eyebags as well as acne on your cheeks, then you shouldn’t stop yourself from buying various types of masks to address all these issues together. Apply a suitable mask on the affected areas and voilà!

3 masks that our Chief Editor, Yang Mei Ling swears by:

First Aid Beauty Ginger & Turmeric Vitamin C Jelly Mask, RM166
Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask With Avocado & Glacier Water, RM126

5. Prejuvenation

Remember passing through the beauty counter in the mall and telling yourself, “I don’t think I need to worry about ageing yet cos I’m still young”? Think again. Prejuvenation (derived from the words ‘prevention’ and ‘rejuvenation’) refers to the act of doing your best to prevent premature skin ageing. While there are many cosmetic treatments out there, Dermatologist Dr. Kiran Lohia shared with Doctor NDTV that the ideal age to start using anti-ageing products is when you’re 25-26 as this is when the amount of collagen that your skin produces is significantly reduced.

#ScoopSquad’s go-to anti-ageing products:

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Moisturizer with Multi-Action Super Lotus, RM250
Innisfree Black Tea Youth Enhancing Cream, RM143

6. Self-care

While there are various interpretations of this term, it simply refers to the act of doing what you think is right to ensure that your physical, mental and emotional health are in check at all times. As Covid-19 has affected everyone in different ways, it’s best to schedule some time off your daily routine to do what makes you happy when you’re feeling a little under the weather.

What I do to cheer myself up on some days:

Step 1: Light up my favourite candle, Lilin+Co’s Strawberries & Champagne (RM25) in the bathroom five minutes before having a hot shower.

Step 2: Spritz a few pumps of Aesop’s Cythera Aromatique Room Spray (aboutRM220) in my bedroom before turning on the air-con.

Step 3: Pour myself a capful of Diptyque’s Do Son Shower Oil (RM259) in the shower – slathering it on my back, shoulders and neck while I listen to soothing jazz tunes.

Step 4: Once I’m done, I start painting my nails using O.P.I.  Bubble Bath Nail Lacquer (RM70).

Step 5: As the last step before heading to bed, I’d apply a thin layer of the Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream EX (RM155) on my face before reading a book and dozing off.

7. Skinimalism

If you’re a minimalist in life who’s always rushing for time, the recommended 10-step skincare routine might be a little too much for you to keep up with. Enter skinimalism: the idea of sticking to your most basic essentials when it comes to fulfilling your daily skincare needs. While the steps can be reduced, the essentials that you shouldn’t sacrifice are your cleanser, exfoliator, sunscreen, moisturiser and serum. Consider anything else you wish to add on a bonus.

8. Skip-care

Multiple skin issues are the worst nightmare for anyone to deal with and this is also the reason why most of us have a long list of beauty products that we rotate. Skip-care is a beauty term that originated from South Korea which suggests that it is possible for you to overcome your beauty concerns by using less beauty products. Instead of using five products to address five different concerns, reach out for multi-use products that can each solve more than one problem in one go.

9. Smudge-proof

Nowadays, the one thing that annoys most women is seeing our face masks stained with makeup when we remove them! Due to this reason, the demand for smudge-proof makeup has been rapidly increasing as it refers to cosmetic products that will leave minimal-to-no stains or are transfer-proof when worn. As a result, we won’t have to do constant touch-ups nor feel ‘defeated’ every time we remove our face masks in the office or back at home.

10. Claw clips

We’re only in the second month of 2021 but it looks like it’s going to be another year where we need to hustle to the core – it is the Year of the Ox after all! With many places still under some sort of MCO, all we can do for now is just get a haircut. But fret not, as claw clips have been trending and all you’ll need to do is tie your hair in a low ponytail (or you can even skip this step if you’d like!), twist it up and secure it using a claw clip – basic or bling-bling, your call!
