It goes without saying that this year’s CNY is a lot different compared to the previous years’, but it doesn’t mean that we’ll forget the true meaning of this auspicious celebration. Here are five ads that stood out for us this year and we reckon will elevate that festive spirit in you!

Behati Baju Cina 2021

Featuring the latest CNY pieces by this local unisex fashion brand that likes to do things a little differently, this video that was shot at Thean Hou Temple in KL can either come off as cool or creepy. Personally, we took it as an uplifting one, looking at the dance moves of the models and the song that was used, which was edited in a creative manner. Unlike other videos that are usually shot in the morning, this one was shot at night, making it look almost similar to an opera performance but with a modern twist. What makes it stand out are the vivid colours of the outfits and the way in which the whole video was shot; revealing that in this modern world, anything is possible as long as you put your heart in to it.

In a nutshell, this ad showcases that what goes around, comes around. Inspired by a true story, the ad starts off with Uncle Tan who is seen driving around on the eve of CNY, delivering fishes with his wife in the car. As he makes his way back to Mrs. Lee’s house in the evening after she tells him about something that he’s left out, he has a short video call with his daughter and granddaughter who won’t be making it home for CNY. Upon reaching Mrs. Lee’s house, he is surprised when she invites him to join her family for a reunion dinner and is reminded of what his wife told him on her death bed five years ago. She mentioned that having a good heart is the biggest prosperity that one can have in life and no one would be left alone if they have it. Acknowledging the blessing that has come his way, he decides to accept Mrs. Lee’s invitation.

Yi Qi By Petronas

Reflecting on the current coronavirus pandemic that has taken over the world, this ad shows how together, we can fight even the darkest storms and create our own joy despite the obstacles that we face. The ad starts off with dancing lions who were ready to usher in the festive season until something befalls the city they live in. As a result, everything becomes gloomy and the festive spirit disappears too. As drum beats are known to be the dancing lions’ navigators, these lions hear faint drum beats from afar and decide to turn everything around by tapping onto those beats and making the best out of them. In the end, thanks to their effort and determination, the festive season was saved!
