While the pandemic has continuously affected us since early 2020, it has also resulted in many of us turning to our hobbies either to pass time or start a side hustle to make ends meet. One of the activities that boomed in the past year were handicrafts – and more specifically, crochet. Within a few months, countless small local businesses selling an array of crochet pieces started popping up on our radar. Creating items from funky accessories to statement tops, these local businesses contributed to the handmade and homemade fashion trend that all of us want to get our hands on!
1. Clown Projects
If you’ve been on Instagram a lot in the past few months, chances are that you’ve probably come across @clownprojects a few times. Relatively new to the scene, its bright, colourful and playful bucket hats, pouches and custom creations have been featured by the likes of Bay Doucet and Lunadira. If you’re in need of a pick-me-up handmade piece to brighten your days, we recommend checking out the patchwork-style bucket hats that come with the option of 49 colours and seven fur trimmings for you to pick from!
2. For All Your Knits
Creating an array of handmade pieces, @forallyourknits is definitely one crochet store to watch. Ranging from statement tops to bikini tops, handbags and accessories for your gadgets, For All Your Knits flaunts a carefree, summer-loving vibe which we really love! Some of the pieces that stole the show for us were the butterfly top that instantly gave us a feel of the early 2000s and the caged market bag with red flowers which we see ourselves carrying on the daily once the lockdown is over.
3. Itoshil.co
One of our favourite things about @itoshil.co is the sultry appeal of its tops! While it doesn’t show much on the front, the back tells a different story with thick lace-ups and skinny bikini-style tie closures that are worthy of a double take. But that’s not all, as you can also spot sweater vests, basic tanks, shoulder bags and even groovy ’70s-inspired tote bags which we can’t stop thinking about!
4. May Crochets
If you need charming crochet additions to your collection, you can give @may.crochets a go. Run by a mother-daughter duo, they started off with adorable plush toys, keychains and even scrunchies before debuting larger creations like bucket hats and bags. They’ve even got the cutest crocheted throw pillows we’ve ever seen!
5. Pretty Knotty
Another one of our favourites is @pretty.knotty with its super cute creations that make us think of sweet treats and sunshine thanks to those berry-coloured thick knits and floral-motif pieces we’ve spotted. Ranging from bags to accessories and tops like cardigans, halters and cropped ones, what really caught our eye was the adorable vest that’s made especially for pets!
6. Slowhands
Playing with bright colours and fun motifs, @shop.slowhands focuses on accessories that’ll instantly put a smile on your face. Featuring frilly bucket hats, bandanas (super love!), baguette bags (also love!), mask chains and more, the creations make the perfect finishing touches to any outfit!
7. Ssoulstudios
Get your dose of the cutest creations at @ssoulstudios – whether it’s a frog bucket hat or a peach sling bag. Creating a variety of tops and accessories in hues that are hard to resist, Ssoulstudios’ pieces are a mix of playful yet subtle styles that would surely get the conversation going once we get to socialise again!
8. The Crochet Guy
Breaking stereotypes in the world of textile handicrafts is @the.crochetguy. From picking up the skill from his mother back when the first MCO was implemented, The Crochet Guy now sells an array of modern and minimalist bags of all shapes and sizes in muted and earthy colours that we’d love to flaunt!
