Escape Into A World Of Whimsy With Khoon Hooi’s ‘Birds In The City’ Capsule Collection

Since the first Movement Control Order was implemented, I found myself revisiting old flicks from my teen years. Movies like A Cinderella Story, Clueless and Never Been Kissed have been a part of my life growing up and in the past year, provided a sweet sense of nostalgia I badly needed to cope with the new normal.

What really stuck with me till today were the iconic female characters and the actors themselves that had so much personality from their quirks right down to their style. And just like how their charm and uniqueness were a joy to watch and feel during this time, we now get to experience them thanks to Khoon Hooi’s gorgeous new capsule collection, ‘Birds in the City’!

Having spent 22 years in the industry, Khoon Hooi is best known for his luxurious tailored creations, some of which have been worn by international celebrities like Katy Perry and Ginnifer Goodwin. For ‘Birds in the City’, the collection takes on a more casual approach by mixing playfulness and fantasy with a touch of sophistication, thanks to exquisite craftsmanship. Inspired by preppy-chic women on and off-screen from the likes of Elle Woods to Taylor Swift, the mini collection is brought to life with vibrant colours, brilliant textures and, of course, home-grown model Natalie Prabha who fronts the lookbook with her chic, carefree vibe!

Designed to transport you away from the stress of reality and into a world full of bliss, the range comes with relaxed styles and bold silhouettes perfect to lounge in on lazy days and virtual dates with the girls or probably even kept safe for a reunion outing once the lockdown is finally lifted – I’d totally do that! The ‘Brooklyn’ Skirt

My favourite piece from the collection is the colour-blocked ‘Brooklyn’ midi skirt! Featuring two layers of sharp accordion pleats (one a darker tone than the other) using organdy fabric – a crisp yet lightweight material, I can only imagine the amount of movement this piece will make when it’s worn. Pair this with the ‘Taylor’ Top for a coordinated ensemble or the ‘Leighton’ Tunic for a feminine yet laid-back look.

The ‘Leighton’ Tunic

Constructed out of 2D star-print lace, the ‘Leighton’ tunic is an effortlessly stylish piece that features a straight, relaxed silhouette with flared sleeves. With its fuss-free design and accompanying slip, I reckon this would be the perfect choice to throw on when you need a quick pick-me-up during the week or are in need of something to wear over your jeans that are both cool and casual!

The ‘Taylor’ Top

The ‘Taylor’ top is a piece that I consider to be the most striking in the collection and I absolutely love it! Designed with dramatic puffed sleeves and a peplum hem, this top is made with Khoon Hooi’s signature brocade fabric, giving it a dimensional, textured look. Aside from that, the piece also comes with a drawstring waist and a statement bow in the front that adds a nice finishing touch to the whole look. Pair it with the ‘Brooklyn’ skirt or your favourite jeans for a dressy everyday getup!
