During our growing-up years, every time a Coca-Cola ad appeared on TV, the immediate reaction for many of us was to instantly grab a can or bottle of the fizzy drink from our fridge. Fast forward to today, the trend has slowly mellowed down but that doesn’t mean the memories have faded away.
Personally, on a hot and sunny day, the first drink that I’d look for would be a can of Coca-Cola before my brain reminds me that it’s better to overcome that thirst by drinking plain water! Regardless of that, upon learning about the collaboration between Coca-Cola and Ice-Watch, I wanted to instantly get the watch for myself because in my eyes, it simply spelled ‘happiness’. In all honesty, I’ve never owned a watch before because every piece I’ve come across looks either too glam for someone like me who works in a ‘fun’ and non-formal industry or too funky for my liking. But this one seems to strike a balance between its looks and functionality, and so, here are three reasons why I decided to get one for myself:
It’s a battery-free piece
Ah yes! One of the reasons why I’ve always dreaded owning a watch is because I remember the trouble my friends used to have to go through when it came to changing the battery of their watches. But on the bright side, with this piece, the battery is no longer a problem as the watch is powered by light sources, which means to say that all I’d have to do is let it charge under the sun and voilà, I can use it until it runs out of power again! Another plus point to this is that it reduces landfills as well. Did you know that batteries in general undergo photochemical reaction as they decompose in landfills and cause additional greenhouse gas emissions?
It’s easy to style
It goes without saying that a watch in today’s context completes a person’s overall look and if your wardrobe is like mine – around 80% casual outfits, then this watch is meant for you! Upon learning that there are three colour options for me to choose from – black, red and white, I decided to go with the white one as my clothes mainly consist of pieces that are bright and bold. Besides that, it stands out on my tanned skin too! More than a statement piece, I’ve also come to realise that this watch is a good conversation starter among people whom I’m meeting for the first time. In a nutshell, on most days, I’d pair this with my denim shorts and off-shoulder top, but on days when I have to meet new faces for work, it goes well with my palazzo pants, turtleneck top and heels as well! Fun fact: the pouch, which the watches come in, is made from recycled plastic bottles. #doublewin!
It makes a great gift
Because I love it so much, I decided to get my childhood BFF a similar one for her birthday recently! Twinning OOTDs have always been our thing and with the same watch in different colours, we just had to decide on the colour of the pants or top that we wanted to wear – and we were done! From a larger point of view, we were both amazed by how Coca-Cola and Ice-Watch – two very different brands with vibrant outlooks, were able to come together to build a happier and more sustainable future for the planet and its people. Similarly, when it came to our daily tasks, the watch served as a daily reminder of how we should be doing our small part which could help Mother Earth in the long run, and for starters, we’re proud to say that both of us have completely stopped using plastic in our daily lives. Cheers to more changes that make a difference in the future, aye?
