As the first half of the year has come and gone, we’re stepping into a fresh season filled with lots of new releases from the world’s biggest streaming service coming our way – and we’re not complaining! Whether you feel like watching a sci-fi anime, a crime documentary, a period drama, an Asian horror film or a feel-good rom-com, we’ve got you covered.

1st July

1. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Directed by Tetsuya Nomura and Takeshi Nozue, this sci-fi anime is back with more puzzling mysteries that need to be solved. Two years after the battle with Sephiroth and the end of Final Fantasy VII, the city is reawakened with the appearance of a trio that kidnaps children who suffer from an illness called Geo-stigma – but not until Cloud Strife discovers the hidden plot that the trio has and how it involves Sephiroth.

2. Sisters

Never liked the idea of moving from one house to another and always wanted to throw a massive farewell party for everyone in the ‘hood? The only difference here is that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey go to the extent where there might not even be a house anymore! The massive party comes after their parents inform them that they have only a week to clean their bedroom before they move out, which eventually leads to a bigger mess that no one other than the two might be able to solve.

3. Stranger Things 4: Volume 2

In Stranger Things 4: Volume 1, we expected to see how the Hawkins kids were going to swing their way through high school, but they ended up going through a dilemma with the unfortunate events that took place thanks to Vecna, the villain from Upside Down. In Volume 2, we’ll find out the fate of Nancy who was caught in Vecna’s clutches and if Eleven would regain her telekinetic powers. At the same time, the trailer shows us how things aren’t looking good as Dr. Brenner tells Eleven that the Hawkins kids aren’t prepared for this fight. Nevertheless, we can’t wait to see if they’ll be able to bring Vecna down.

4. Girl In The Picture

Based on a true crime that had taken place, this documentary narrates the life of Tonya Hughes. Found dead in a sudden accident, her story unveils when the police discover that there is more to be discovered about this woman, who had lived in multiple states using different names. While Tonya’s relationship with her father was a little disturbing in the past, sources discover that he had abused and kidnapped Tonya. However, upon obtaining a scholarship to study in a different state, she became pregnant and ended up going to Alabama with her boyfriend, who woke up to a mysterious note that stated that she was taken away by her father. Tonya eventually gave birth to her son and started working at a strip club, only to be found dead in a freak accident that took place a few days before her 21st birthday.

5. Boo, Bitch

If you’re looking for a rom-com to binge-watch, leave it to your favourite star from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before to give you what you’re craving for! In Boo, Bitch, Erika Vu (played by Lana Condor) will finally be leaving high school, but no one really knows who she is thanks to mean queen, Riley (played by Aparna Brielle). However, Erika’s best friend, Gia (played by Zoe Margaret Colletti), gets her to attend the year-end party, where Erika finds the courage to capture the attention of Riley’s ex-boyfriend, Jake C. (played by Mason Versaw). With some alcohol involved, Gia and Erika end up having to look for their missing necklace through the night – an experience that ends up changing their lives forever. The series also stars Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Madison Thompson and Jami Alix.

6. Incantation

Directed by Kevin Ho, this is a typical Asian horror film that will easily give you goosebumps! In this movie, a mother accidentally oversteps her religious boundaries, which leads multiple spirits into her and her daughter’s lives. It goes to the point where their lives are tormented by scary and unexpected episodes that disrupt their day-to-day activities. What is unknown yet is if the spirits will be at ease or if the family will end up giving up at the end.

7. She Would Never Know

Are you into love office romance-based dramas? Then catch Won Jin-ah and Rowoon climb their way to becoming a couple in this new release. In this series, Jin-ah plays the role of Yoon Song-ah, a beauty product marketer and go-getter who achieves multiple milestones in just a few years. While dating her head of department, her trainee, Chae Hyun-seung (played by Rowoon) starts to have a crush on Song-ah until he discovers her secret and that the guy she has been dating has been unfaithful. While the plot of this story can seem a little ‘normal’, be prepared for a series of heartbreaks and findings that will leave you in awe.

8. Resident Evil

Calling all Resident Evil fans: it’s time to rejoice! Starring Ella Balinska, Siena Agudong and Tamara Smart, this popular sci-fi series is making its way to Netflix, where you’ll be able to see Jade and Billie Wesker move to New Racoon City. Despite staying in a place that looks normal, they discover that there’s more to this place and their father might be holding dark secrets that could destroy the world. Fast forward to 2036 when there are less than 15 million people left on earth along with six billion monsters, the world is in chaos as people are left to suffer with an unknown virus. However, Jade and Billie continue to discover that their father might just be the person who’s holding the key to the problem.

15th July

9. Persuasion

#Throwback to the times we enjoyed (or were forced into?) reading Jane Austen’s classic, Persuasion. Starring our very own homegrown superstar, Henry Golding and Dakota Johnson, this movie narrates the story of Anne (who was once engaged to Captain Wentworth) who has to face him after seven years as her family is on the brink of bankruptcy. The choice now lies in Anne’s hands: will she put her family first and or choose William Elliott (played by Henry), another suitor?

10. Remarriage & Desires

If you thought that matchmaking agencies no longer exist in modern times, think again. In this series which stars Kim Hee-Sun, Lee Hyun-Wook and Jung Eu-Gene, you’ll learn how an exclusive matchmaking agency that caters to upper-class women is used as a tool for revenge. Seo Hye-Seung (played by Kim Hee-Sun), who loses everything, gets a second chance at life when she is introduced to this agency by Choi Yoo-Seon (played by Cha Ji-Yeon), after which she works her way to getting the revenge that her heart is longing for towards her ex-husband’s mistress.
