Have you ever found it bizarre how, at times, you can be fuming mad but the moment you enter the ladies, apply some lipstick and take a deep breath, you feel slightly calmer? Call it our ‘magic wand’ but that pop of colour on our face can make a lot of difference on how we feel about ourselves. Just like colour pencils, we can never have too many lip colours in our makeup stash, and while a red or a nude colour may be our go-to, it doesn’t mean that we can’t experiment or like other colours too!
Personally, stepping out of the house (even to the grocery shop!) with bare lips makes me feel rather incomplete. At the same time, to get into my WFH mode every day, I’ve recently started applying my favourite lipstick every morning. Dabbing on a layer of lip balm before I put my lipstick on helps the colour last longer and gives my lips the hydration it needs. On days when I’ve got virtual meetings, I’ll use a lip liner so that the colour of my lipstick doesn’t end up bleeding. Still can’t imagine what’s it like to see people wearing lipsticks even when they’re at home? Here, we reveal our favourite lippies and why they top our list:

“Before coming across Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in Backtalk Comfort Matte, I used to shop for drugstore lip colours. But through some research, I finally found my perfect fit which was this unique nude lippie, which is matte but yet, helps my lips feel moisturised at the same time. Call it high standards but other nude matte lipsticks that I’ve tried in the past always made my lips dry, to the extent that my lip lines could be seen clearly at times! Besides its hydrating and matte factors, this lip colour has a purple-pink undertone with hints of brown that makes me look instantly refreshed whenever I put it on. Unfortunately, the lipstick is going to finish soon but I’m excited to make another Vice Lipstick purchase in the shade of Hitch Hike to see how the brownish-red hue will look on me!”

Unlike most matte lipsticks I’ve tried, this one’s got a super smooth and lightweight texture that just glides on my lips and makes them look ultra-soft and hydrated. “One of my absolute favourite lipsticks is this SilkyGirl Moisture Rich Lipcolor in 04 Sass (previously known as 04 Illusion). There are days when I can appear very pale especially if I wasn’t able to get my beauty sleep the night before. But the colour intensity of this lipstick is amazing and does wonders; not only does it match my skin tone very well and isn’t too bright, it makes me look awake instantly too! I’ve always had a serious case of dark circles and eye bags because of poor blood circulation, but thanks to the shade of this lipstick, I’m able to divert people’s attention to my lips instead. Be it for virtual meetings or when meeting people face to face, this lippie doesn’t just make me appear professional but also more approachable than if I had a bright red lipstick on.”

“Seeing Rihanna wear the Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Violet Fury in Fenty Beauty’s campaign a few years ago got me attracted to this lippie instantly! I knew I had to give this colour a shot although when I first tried it on, I was honestly a little sceptical as I felt that it gave out strong gothic vibes. But then I decided to keep it on to see how others around me would react and to my surprise, everyone I met on that day said that the colour brought out the real me (I believe that life is one big par-tay!). I love the creamy texture and the colour usually stays on all day. It can get a little dry at times but with the help of a lip balm that I apply as the base and at other times of the day, this isn’t a problem anymore. On days when I’m a little under the weather, this lipstick helps me show up in a vibrant mood. The thin stick allows me to perfectly apply the colour even on the corners of my lips and I don’t have to worry about using it when I’m in a rush. No doubt it isn’t suitable for daily wear or client meetings, but I still enjoy wearing it to work at times, to social events, for a fun day out and every single time when I hit the clubs!”

“When it comes to my pick of lipsticks, I always go for a bold colour – mostly a fun fuchsia for daily wear, a bold red for meetings and occasionally, a sultry deep purple for night events. But that’s all in the past now – those good ol’ pre-pandemic days! I believe that every woman should have a reliable red lippie in her life, and one of my favourites for a few years now is this standout ‘couture’ red from Dior that comes in a slim stick and sexy red casing with the brand’s iconic Cannage motif. Although it looks like a classic red in the packaging, it turns out to be an orange-red on my lips that complements my skin tone very well, with a great colour pay-off even in one swipe. It’s ultra-pigmented so I hardly need two layers or any other makeup to look polished whenever I put it on, and despite it being long-lasting and barely ever needing any touch-up throughout the day, it’s pretty easy to remove using cleansing oil. I love that it glides on smoothly and feels creamy with a satin finish thanks to a polymer combined with a plant-based oil, and the comfort it brings to my lips are second to none!”
