Artists, fans, everyone – get excited cos Uniqlo has just announced its UT Grand Prix 2022 T-shirt design competition! Revolving around the popular U.S. comic strip Peanuts, the contest celebrates creativity and talent (which we’re sure are abundant among Malaysians) and the 100th anniversary of its author, Charles M. Schulz.
Since debuting Peanuts in 1950 in seven U.S. newspapers, Charles’ beloved comic strip and its characters – Charlie Brown, Snoopy and friends – went on to become icons in pop culture with television specials, mascots and even cameos in fashion collaborations.
Now, with it being the theme of 2022’s Uniqlo UT Grand Prix competition, participants from all over will get to express their own version of the world of Peanuts whether it’s through the comic’s storylines or main characters onto a T-shirt template as a canvas. A panel of judges, including representatives from the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, will oversee the submitted artworks.
Fun fact: Did you know that Charles had his fair share of failures and rejections since high school? Fortunately, his ambition, talent and love for drawing kept him going till he earned the title of Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1955 and 1964. If he can do it, so can you!
The Grand Prize winner will receive US$20,000 (about RM84,000) while the 2nd Prize winner will get US$10,000 (about RM42,000) along with an internship or tour for both at Charles M. Schultz Creative Associates in Santa Rosa, California – how exciting! The 3rd prize winner will bag US$5,000 (about RM21,000) while Special Award winners will get US$1,000 (about RM4,200) each. On top of that, the winning designs will be featured and sold as part of the retailer’s Spring/Summer 2022 collections worldwide.
The contest, launched yesterday and ending on 31st August 2021, is open to anyone and everyone regardless of their age, gender, occupation and nationality. As the Uniqlo UT Grand Prix was first started in 2005 to encourage artistic expression, this is the perfect time to unleash your creativity and let your imagination run wild!
